Thinking about switching to an air source heat pump (ASHP)? You’re not alone — more and more households across South Wales and beyond are choosing this clean, efficient technology to cut energy bills and carbon emissions. But did you know that summer is actually the best time to make the switch?
Here’s why — plus our simple guide to preparing your home so you get the very best out of your new system.
☀️Why Summer is the Best Time to Install an Air Source Heat Pump
Many people wait until the colder months to think about their heating — but planning ahead pays off:
✅Mild Weather Means Easier Installation
Your installer will need to work both inside and outside your home. Summer’s longer, dryer days make installation quicker and more comfortable for everyone — no rain delays, frozen ground, or extra heating costs from electric heaters during the downtime.
✅You’re Not Relying on Heating
Replacing a heating system in winter can be inconvenient if you have to go for a good few days without heat or hot water. While we can gladly loan you some plug-in heaters, in summer, you’ll barely notice the disruption.
✅Beat the Winter Rush
Autumn and winter are our busiest seasons for heating installations. Booking now means you can choose dates that suit you — and avoid last-minute stress when the temperatures drop.
✅Ready for Lower Bills by Winter
Get your system in place, your radiators upgraded — so you’re all set to enjoy maximum savings and cosy comfort when winter arrives.

How to Prepare Your Home
Whether you’re booking this summer or planning ahead, here’s how to get your home heat pump-ready:
1️⃣ Check Your Insulation
However you heat your home, a well-insulated home keeps heat in, so your system works efficiently. This is especially true for heat pumps which aim mostly to maintain your home between 18-21 degrees.
Make sure your loft insulation is at least 150mm thick.
Consider wall insulation (cavity or external) if you don’t have it yet.
Seal draughts around windows, doors and floorboards.
2️⃣ Review Your Radiators and cold spots
Air source heat pumps work best with larger radiators or underfloor heating, as they run at lower temperatures than traditional boilers.
Generally, we upgrade between 40-60% of radiators in a heat pump installation. As a heat pump brings your whole house up to temperature, it’s important there aren’t any cold spots which could create draughts as hot air and cold air circulate within the home.
3️⃣ Consider the Right Outdoor Spot
Your outdoor heat pump unit needs a clear, well-ventilated space.
Look for a place which would be easy to access for maintenance.
Currently in Wales, your heat pump needs to be 3m from a boundary. There’s a consultation now active to reduce this distance to 1m from a boundary. If you need to site a heat pump within a boundary zone, you will require planning and we can discuss the best location during your survey.
4️⃣ Plan for a Hot Water Cylinder
Homes need a compatible hot water cylinder for their ASHP.
Consider your options for locations in the home – this is something we can discuss during your survey. Some customers place horizontal cylinders in their attics (we prefer not to install these tanks), others squeeze them under the stairs, in kitchen cupboards, corners of a garages, an airing cupboard or a utility room.
Expect some pipework changes — we will handle this as part of the installation.
5️⃣ Prepare for Installation Day
A typical install takes around a week.
Clear outdoor and indoor access routes.
Move garden furniture or bins away from where the unit will go.
Be ready for some work within the rooms, such as pipework or radiator changes, and for the installation of your hot water cylinder.
